Saying Goodbye To The Fargo INC! Editor

Saying Goodbye To The Fargo INC! Editor

After about three years of working with Spotlight Media, Fargo INC! Editor Nate Mickelberg is leaving to pursue a different opportunity. While everyone at Spotlight Media will miss him, we wish him nothing but the best.

“Nate has done a tremendous job helping create the Fargo INC! brand,” said Andrew Jason, Spotlight Media’s Editorial Director. “He has become an expert in the FM business scene and he will be sorely missed, but we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

We sat down with Nate for one final Q&A to reflect on his time here at Spotlight Media and Fargo INC!.

What’d been your favorite part about working at Fargo INC!/Spotlight?

The creative freedom. I can count on one hand the number of times I had to defend an idea, and that’s a testament to the amount of creative trust they had in me. I genuinely appreciated it, and I think it’s a big part of what makes Spotlight different.

What are some of the stories you’re most proud of covering/working on?

A few come to mind:

  • May 2018 cover story, “Why Fargo?” – Not only interesting personal narratives but a great overall sell of Fargo as a place to start and grow a business.
  • October 2017 cover story (and subsequent evergreen article), “A Career After Camo” – A profile of seven area veterans who started businesses after their time in service. It was a fascinating look at the different perspectives about how military life can both help and hurt an entrepreneurial mentality.
  • April 2016 cover story, “Swimming with the Sharks” – Definitely the most fun (and stressful) photo shoot we ever did. We rented out the MSUM swimming pool for an entire morning to photograph the cofounders of PRx Performance — a lot of people didn’t know that cover was actually shot underwater.

What’s one thing you wish people knew about Fargo INC!/Spotlight?

It’s more of a request, I’d say: Keep supporting local media. At a time when our problems can seem so big and distant, local stories are a great way to connect with and celebrate all the people in our community who are working to solve those problems in their own small way.

What do you think you’ll miss the most about being here?

I’m really going to miss the creative process. I’ve worked with the same core team all three years I’ve been here, and I think we got to a point where we were finishing each other’s sentences, creatively speaking. That’s not easily found or replicated, and while I’m going to miss working with them, I’m really proud of all the great stories we told together.

Sarah Stauner | Graphic Designer

Sarah Stauner

I’m originally from central Wisconsin, but graduated from UMD in Duluth, Minnesota with a BFA in Graphic Design and Marketing. In my time at UMD I worked for our student news organization, and that’s where I fell in love with journalism. I’ve always wanted my career to be a pairing of journalism and design – and that’s what I’m doing here at Spotlight!

What drew you to Spotlight Media?
I’ve been reading Spotlight’s magazines since I moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area last year. I always have appreciated the quality of design and content that the magazines include, and that they are each unique in their own way.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I recently started biking and I really love yoga. I enjoy going to the movie theater and keeping up to date on new films. Spending time with family is a big part of my life too.

What’s your favorite book and/or movie?
A couple of my favorite movies right now are La La Land, Black Panther and The Shape of Water. About Time is the one movie I can watch over and over, and still not get sick of it.

Share something about yourself that would surprise us.
In our one bedroom apartment, we have approximately 15 plants.

What’s the most useless talent you have?
I can do that three leaf clover thing with my tongue. Totally useless – unless you’re trying to impress children.

Spotlight Media Team Took To The Streets For Distribution Day

Spotlight Media Team Took To The Streets For Distribution Day

On Friday, June 8, the Spotlight Media team delivered our new June magazines to more than 300 businesses throughout Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo.

Spotlight Media employees visited area businesses to get the new issues out and be more involved in the community. This distribution day was part of a company-wide effort to be more efficient with all processes, including distribution.

Our employees paired off into teams and tackled a different part of the Fargo-Moorhead area. We all had a list of destinations to visit, and we grabbed several boxes each of Fargo Monthly, Fargo INC!, Design & Living Magazine and Bison Illustrated before hitting the streets.

After we finished our routes, we met back at our Spotlight Media office downtown to reconnect about the day and what we learned about our community while we were out and about.

The Spotlight Media team on Distribution Day

Here’s what some of the Spotlight Media team had to say about our distribution day:

  • Sales Executive Dan Helm: “It was a good way to end the week and get out and talk to people in the community that I wouldn’t have gotten to during a normal work day.”
  • Design & Living Magazine Associate Publisher Chantell Ramberg: “It was great to see how much of the community appreciates our mission and what we do as a company. I felt fortunate to have a day dedicated to connecting with our audience.”
  • Chief Operations Officer Steve Kruse: “It was a fun team building day and it was also fun to go into the different businesses and see how excited they were to see us when we walked in with their magazines! I also have a new found appreciation for what our distribution team does on a daily basis.”
  • Design & Living Magazine Editor Becca Opp: “I love team delivery day. This year, the associate publisher of Design & Living Magazine and I had a great time getting out there and meeting our readers!”

Bidding Farewell To The Bison Illustrated Editor

Bidding Farewell To The Bison Illustrated Editor

After more than five years of working with Spotlight Media, Bison Illustrated Editor Joe Kerlin is leaving Fargo to pursue different opportunities. While everyone at Spotlight Media will miss him, we wish him nothing but the best for his future endeavors.

“Joe has created a fantastic reputation during his time with Bison Illustrated,” said Andrew Jason, Spotlight Media’s Editorial Director. “Because of Joe’s tenacious approach to creating great content, the magazine has created some truly compelling storytelling. We will miss him greatly.”

We sat down with Joe for one final Q&A to reflect on his time here at Spotlight Media and Bison Illustrated.

When did you start at Spotlight Media?

I started in January 2013 as an intern. It was actually the day I came in for an interview. I wore a nice shirt and maybe even a tie. [Former General Manager] Brent Tehven sat me down in the office with Andrew hanging out beside him. The only question I remember him asking me was: ‘Do you like the Bison?’ I said, ‘yeah, I’ve been to all the football games over the past two seasons. He hired me on the spot. I talked to [Publisher] Mike [Dragosavich] briefly after that meeting, and they showed me around. They sat me next to the designers and told me to start writing game recaps about the football season for Spotlight’s first-ever Championship Issue.

What’s been your favorite part about working for Spotlight Media and Bison Illustrated?

Where do I start? My favorite part has been interacting with current and former student-athletes. They have been so good to us over at the magazine and have been generous with their time. They all preach the same thing about Bison Pride and how important the culture is to success. I could see how for readers or other people in media that message could get dragged out and boring, but student-athletes talk about culture and Bison Pride because it’s so instrumental in their success. Now that I’ve been here for more than five years, it’s been fun to see student-athletes grow into bigger roles for their programs and then move on to the real world and begin their life as adults in the working world.

Spotlight Media Team at Sidestreet

Spotlight Media team celebrated Joe’s hard work and wished him the best luck with his future adventure

What are some of the stories you’re most proud of covering/working on?

Proud is an interesting way to put it… Being here the same time as five football national championships, two “ESPN College GameDays,” Carson Wentz and the whole NFL Draft experience has been downright dumb luck. I feel way more fortunate than proud to have covered those events. Although, I am super grateful for Spotlight giving me the opportunity to cover these once-in-a-lifetime events.

I think I’m most proud of covering stories like Don Morton retiring from Microsoft. The “Where Are They Now?” stories always meant a little bit more to me because our subjects were an important part of the history at NDSU but have have gone unnoticed while they were student-athletes. So it was my responsibility to give them some recognition for all they had done for the university. Mike Favor, Snuffy Byers and Isreal Moses, that story, I can’t thank them enough for their time with that. The work they’re doing now in Minneapolis is incredible for the kids in the area. That was probably the most meaningful story I ever wrote.

What’s one thing you wish people knew about Spotlight Media and/or Bison Illustrated?

How much every person in this company cares about the work they’re doing. In the creative industry, you can get work done without caring as much about the topic, but it usually results in doing the bare minimum and the quality isn’t quite where it should/could be. But when you care about what you’re presenting to the community, you always go the extra mile to make sure the story is not only accurate, but impactful. People around here care about what they’re doing. I don’t know if it’s like that in every job.

What do you think you’ll miss the most about being here?

The Fargo-Moorhead community. Bison Nation. My colleagues. The people, the people, the people. It was a dream of mine to cover sports. I accomplished it, but that’s not what got me out of bed in the morning. What got me out of bed was the opportunity to seek, build and maintain relationships with the individuals I worked closely with. I had a responsibility, to them, to make Bison Illustrated the best it could possibly be, and I hope we accomplished that.
