Spotlight Media Had Fun At Unglued: Summer Camp

The fourth annual Unglued: Summer Camp happened Aug. 31 – Sept. 2 at YMCA Camp Cormorant.

Around 150 campers attended the 21+ summer camp that had events such as sunrise yoga, water aerobics, book club, jewelry making, free pinball, drinks thanks to Drekker and Proof Artisan Distillers, an epic dance party and more. For the third year in a row, Molly Yeh, food blogger and host of the Food Network show Girl Meets Farm, cooked up some meals and treats for campers.

Design & Living Magazine Editor Becca Opp and staff photographer Hillary Ehlen both attended the camp for the first time this year. Here’s what Opp had to say about this experience:

“Right away, I knew that I was finally about to get the childhood camp experience I never had,” she said. “That is exactly how it was, only better. My favorite parts of camp were definitely the people and the food, in no particular order. Molly Yeh and her crew killed it in the kitchen, and I got to meet so many awesome makers, creatives and creatives-in-the-making.”

Ehlen went to summer camp almost every year as a kid and loved it, so she knew this would be right up her alley.

“I was expecting a super fun, kind of wild weekend filled with awesome food, cocktails and people – and I’d say it was exactly that and then some,” she said. “Upon arriving we were greeted with a shot of champagne and the camp ‘orientation’ featured a dancing unicorn holding roman candles – that definitely set the tone for what the weekend had in store. Ashley Morken and her crew were so enthusiastic and did such a great job of planning the weekend right down to the tiniest little details.”

Here’s what she said were her favorite parts of the camp:

“Probably the dance on Saturday night! All of the classes they offered were also awesome, and they also gave us plenty of free time to lay on the beach so the weekend didn’t feel too busy.”

Next year the summer camp will take place Aug. 23-25. For more about this year’s adventure, check out the October issue of Design & Living Magazine!

Tell us a little bit about yourself before Spotlight Media.
“I’m from Glen Ullin, N.D., and I’m the youngest of six siblings. I moved to Fargo almost five years ago now, (gasp!) to attend NDSU. There, I studied visual arts and English education. I graduated in December 2016 with a degree in English education with an emphasis in communications. Before coming to Spotlight Media, I completed my student teaching at Ben Franklin Middle School in North Fargo. I have also been a consultant at the NDSU Center for Writers and a contributing writer to the NDSU Spectrum.”

What kinds of hobbies and/or interests do you have outside of work?
“I love trying new restaurants and window-shopping in Downtown Fargo. I am very interested in visual arts, especially animation. When I’m not at work, you can usually find me covered in paint from some project or other.”

Share something about yourself that would surprise us.
“I have never traveled outside of the United States.”

What drew you to Spotlight Media?
“I saw an online ad for assistant editor of Design & Living Magazine, and I felt like the job description had been written about me. It was a very weird feeling!”

What’s your favorite part about your new position, so far? What are you looking forward to?
“So far, interviews have been my favorite part because I enjoy talking to people and learning about all things interior design. I’m also looking forward to sending the March issue to print, the DIY and Tiny House issues coming up and just having warmer weather during photo shoots.”

If you could switch your job with anyone else within Spotlight Media for a week, whose job would you want? Why?
“I would switch jobs with a designer because I think I’d like laying out the pages.”

Lastly, is there a food you can’t stand and don’t understand why others like it?
“I absolutely hate ranch dressing.”
