Spotlight Media is constantly growing and changing. As we’re sad to see team members leave, we’re always excited to announce our newest hires. Since all our employees come from a wide range of backgrounds, each member offers unique skills that help the Spotlight Media team become even stronger and more well-rounded.

Meet our new content strategist, Sam Herder, and learn what makes him a perfect fit for our company.

Sam Herder | Content Strategist

Sam Herder

“I grew up in Breckenridge, Minnesota, which is about 45 minutes south of Fargo. I attended NDSU from 2011-2015, where I worked at the campus newspaper, ‘The Spectrum,’ as the sports editor and eventual editor-in-chief. Pursuing my journalism degree, I got great experience covering the Bison’s first four national titles. After graduation, I worked in the newspaper industry as a sports reporter for a couple years before joining Spotlight Media.”

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
“Nothing too specific, as long as I’m with friends, laughing and having a good time. Whether that’s on a pontoon, around a bonfire or just watching games on TV.”

What’s your favorite book and/or movie?
“I loved the ‘Shiloh’ book series growing up. I’m more of a TV series guy than movies, and ‘Friday Night Lights’ is my favorite series.”

Share something about yourself that would surprise us.
“I was born January 1 in a town of 8,000 people but was not the first baby born that year at that hospital.”

What originally drew you to Spotlight Media?
“I’ve always wanted to get back to Fargo eventually in some sort of writing position. Along with being able to cover the Bison again as one part of the job, this was a perfect fit.”

What are you looking forward to the most with your new position?
“Getting to know the F-M metro better overall as a community.”

If you could switch your job with anyone else within Spotlight Media for a day, whose job would you want? Why?
“Joe Kerlin’s so I could get his parking pass.”

Last question, most important, if Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you? Why?
“Will Ferrell because he would be able to make my life seem more entertaining than it really is.”
