Fargo Monthly: Who What Wear

* This was Fargo Monthly Editor Alexandra Martin’s favorite cover story of the year:

I’d have to say that the “Who What Wear” cover story from September’s Fargo Monthly will always be special to me and a favorite of mine. It was the first issue where I was editor of the magazine, so it was my first time researching out to the community and making connections with all sorts of local makers and fashionistas. In this piece, we went into the closets of five Fargo-based individuals and asked them to share stories about special pieces of clothing and what style and personal expression through dress meant to them. My background is in fashion communications, so doing a story on what makes Fargo fashion special was a great way to kick off my role as editor. I’d like to think it was a fun way to showcase the different styles and tastes that this area holds.

* This was one of  Bison Illustrated Editor Nolan Schmidt’s favorite cover stories of the year:

We worked closely with the Bison wrestling program and showcased just how dedicated these guys are to the sports. For me, it goes beyond that though, all of the wrestlers and head coach Roger Kish were very appreciative and nice to myself and our photographer Hillary. They are not only special athletes, but they are special people too, that’s why I had so much fun working with them for November’s issue.

December

Bison Illustrated: Herd Of The North

* One of Bison Illustrated Editor Nolan Schmidt’s favorite stories of the year was Shep’s Strength:

The best story this year was from December’s issue, in my view. I did a piece with Bison wide receiver Darrius Shepherd, who lost his father to cancer in the offseason. It hit home for me because I lost my father around the same age as Darrius, so talking with him about that subject was very special to me. I was also grateful that he was able to open up to someone he barely knew about a topic so sensitive. I think it turned out to be a wonderful story, and I’m really happy with the way it turned out.

My Favorite Fargo Monthly Interviews

My Favorite Fargo Monthly Interviews

Photos special to Fargo Monthly

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I especially love writing features and profiles on interesting people. I’ve interviewed so many cool people both in and out of Fargo-Moorhead through freelance writing, previous jobs and here at Spotlight Media.

As part of my duties as Web Editor, I write exclusive stories for our publications’ websites, mainly Fargo Monthly, and recently I paired up with Jade Presents to interview some of the comedy and musical acts before their performances in our area.

Here are three of my favorite interviews I’ve done so far:

Brian Regan

Brian Regan

My husband introduced me to Brian Regan’s comedy a few years ago, and I’m so glad he did. We had front row seats when Regan last visited Fargo two years ago, so we were both so excited to hear he was coming back to the Fargo Theatre. Getting to interview him was so great because he was so kind and funny. I even made him laugh a few times (even if it was out of pity, I don’t care), so basically my life goals have been achieved. Plus, he performed on my birthday, so seeing him for a second time was the perfect way to wrap up my 28th birthday.

Halestorm

Halestorm

I’d heard of Halestorm for years because I have a few friends who are big fans, but I didn’t really listen to their music until they performed at the Civic Center a few years ago. I’m a huge fan of Dorothy, who was the opening act for the show, and Lita Ford finished out the night full of female empowerment and killer rock music that I’ll still remember for years to come. I became obsessed with their music after that show, and I decided I definitely wanted to see them whenever they came to Fargo next. Before they performed at Bluestem with Joan Jett in August, I got to interview Arejay Hale, the drummer and brother of lead singer Lzzy Hale. He was so friendly, humble and positive, and his passion for music and the band made me love them even more than I already did. They’re known as a live band because their performances are so electric and unparalleled, and this show was definitely no exception.

Nathaniel Rateliff

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

I’ve been a huge NRATNS fan since their first album came out a few years ago. Anyone who knows me knows how obsessed I am with “I Need Never Get Old” and “S.O.B.” (the later of which played during my wedding reception a few weeks ago). I was lucky enough to be part of the pre-sale for tickets, which was super exciting. I got to interview keyboardist Mark Shusterman before their show, and he was so gracious, friendly and just excited about playing music with his friends. Through some problem with my initial ticket order and the kindness of someone sitting near us at the show, my husband and I sat (well, stood and danced) in the second row. Finally seeing them perform live was basically my dream come true, and I’d highly recommend seeing them live, whether you have before or not.

There are many ways to tell a story, but clothing can often speak a world of stories and experiences without uttering a word. A ring can capture the memory of a loved one, a torn pair of jeans can memorialize a thrilling misadventure or a t-shirt can make a fun-filled vacation. We entered the closets of some of Fargo’s most stylish and let them give their clothes a platform to share their own unique stories.

It’s football season, Bison Nation. 2018 will see the North Dakota State Bison go for their seventh FCS National Championship in eight years. While past teams have had plenty of attention and expectations attached to them, this year seems different. This year’s team is shaping up to be one of the most dominant in the program’s history. Is the hype surrounding this team for real? Is it warranted? It’s safe to say you should believe the hype because this Bison team is ready to dominate the standard.

Since all our employees come from a wide range of backgrounds, each member offers unique skills that help the Spotlight Media team become even stronger and more well-rounded.

Meet our new Fargo Monthly editor and learn what makes her a perfect fit for our company.

Alexandra Martin | Fargo Monthly Editor

Alexandra Martin

I graduated from Stephens College, a small, Midwestern women’s college, with a BFA in Fashion Communications. I was born and raised in Alabama, spend a brief time in New York City, finished off school in Missouri and I recently found myself relocated to Fargo. I’ve worked in many fields, including graphic design, fashion merchandising and digital lifestyle publication and I’m excited to be able to finally narrow down on my passion: print publications!

What drew you to Spotlight Media?
I relocated to Fargo thanks to my boyfriend’s new job. When we were first looking into the area and researching all it had to offer, a realtor sent us a few copies of Spotlight Media’s publications in the mail. As soon as I flipped through the magazines, I looked up and said, “I’m going to work for one of these.” And here I am! I’ve always loved the hole that local publications fill and I’m a huge proponent of supporting local business and culture.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I recently have found myself in the kitchen and really enjoying cooking. I follow a plant-based diet, which the Midwest isn’t 100% accommodating of all the time, so if I want a tasty dish on the go, I know I have to make it myself! I’ve started broadening my culinary horizons and cooking all sorts of vegetable combinations I never would have previously. (Pecan braised artichoke is a recent favorite!)

What’s your favorite book and/or movie?
My favorite piece of classic literature is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, I have so much respect for her as a groundbreaking, young woman.
Lately, I have been loving Mamma Mia! because ABBA is one of my favorite bands and I love a good sing-a-long.

Share something about yourself that would surprise us.
I am a debutante, yes like in She’s The Man. Any excuse to wear a gorgeous gown and go to a big party.

What’s the most useless talent you have?
My jaw is double-jointed, which means I can open it wider to fit more food into it (I eat fast). And on a similar note, I am also good at staging food photos for Instagram.
