What’s a ridiculous fact about yourself?
I’m from the land of hockey, but didn’t put a pair of skates on until a few months ago. Please don’t kill me, Grand Forks.

Jennifer Gades

Jennifer Gades, Fargo INC! Associate Publisher

What’s a ridiculous fact about yourself?
Hmm…I can make balloon animals?  I also come from a long line of creative marketers.  My grandfather once owned a lion, a lion cub, monkeys, and a kangaroo (some of them even lived in his apartment), which all started as a marketing strategy to attract movie-goers to his theatre.

Ariel Holbrook

Ari Holbrook, Social Media & PR Coordinator

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?
I’m a complete craft brew nerd, so I’m always trying to find a new brewery or coffee spot to check out or travel to. I also love yoga, scrolling the internet for memes, painting, and writing.

Nick Schommer

Nick Schommer, Business Development Manager

If there was a movie about your life, who would play you and why?
I would have to play that role myself.

Paul Hoefer

Paul Hoefer, Senior Sales Executive

What’s a ridiculous fact about yourself?
I won Rookie of the Year my first year of playing Rugby at MSUM in 2003-2004.  Now I get tired and sore just thinking about playing a Rugby Match.

Neil Keltgen

Neil Keltgen, Associate Sales Director

What’s a ridiculous fact about yourself?
I tore both my pectoral muscles doing a fitness evaluation. The surgeries and recovery were a long process, but I finally have an answer for a question like this.

Nick Linder

Nick Linder, Sales Representative

What’s a ridiculous fact about yourself?
It has taken me 26 moves in the last 15 years to finally have a place to call home.

Jennifer McColm

Jennifer McColm, Business Development Assistant

What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I’m usually biking, practicing yoga, or working on some sort of creative project.  My latest labor of love was restoring an old 56′ Shasta camper.

Ross Uglem

Ross Uglem, Bison Illustrated Contributor

If there was a movie about your life, who would play you and why?
Paul Rudd — he’s quite a bit better looking (and older) than I am but we have a similar sense of sarcastic humor.

Bison Illustrated Will Be On Seats For 10/20 Game

This is for you, Bison Nation! Spotlight Media just reached a huge new milestone, and we’re so excited to tell you about it.

The October issue of Bison Illustrated will be on all 18,000 seats at the FargoDome for North Dakota State’s game against Illinois State on Saturday, Oct. 20. Cheer on the Bison while reading our ultimate fan guide! We found all the gear, products, home accents and opportunities for you to live your best Bison life.

Here’s what Publisher Mike Dragosavich said about this in the latest Bison Illustrated:

“In the 8 years that I have been involved with this publication, I always wanted to put an issue on each seat at a Bison football game. Now that we did it, we had to make sure we made the magazine something you not only enjoy reading but would want to take home. So we thought we would make this issue more about resources and a complete guide to being an NDSU super fan! We tried to put promo codes to help you save money, a calendar to help you keep track of everything going on and a bunch of great resourceful information to keep you connected!”

Bison Illustrated
Bison Illustrated Editor Nolan Schmidt is also excited about this special moment:

“We are afforded some tremendous opportunities at Bison Illustrated. We get to converse with amazing student-athletes and work hand-in-hand with a first class athletic department. However, this opportunity almost seems to be a once in a lifetime sort of thing. The fact that everyone will receive a copy of the October issue via their seat at the Fargodome is special and rare.”

Come celebrate this achievement with us and cheer for the Bison this Saturday!

My Favorite Fargo Monthly Interviews

My Favorite Fargo Monthly Interviews

Photos special to Fargo Monthly

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I especially love writing features and profiles on interesting people. I’ve interviewed so many cool people both in and out of Fargo-Moorhead through freelance writing, previous jobs and here at Spotlight Media.

As part of my duties as Web Editor, I write exclusive stories for our publications’ websites, mainly Fargo Monthly, and recently I paired up with Jade Presents to interview some of the comedy and musical acts before their performances in our area.

Here are three of my favorite interviews I’ve done so far:

Brian Regan

Brian Regan

My husband introduced me to Brian Regan’s comedy a few years ago, and I’m so glad he did. We had front row seats when Regan last visited Fargo two years ago, so we were both so excited to hear he was coming back to the Fargo Theatre. Getting to interview him was so great because he was so kind and funny. I even made him laugh a few times (even if it was out of pity, I don’t care), so basically my life goals have been achieved. Plus, he performed on my birthday, so seeing him for a second time was the perfect way to wrap up my 28th birthday.

I’d heard of Halestorm for years because I have a few friends who are big fans, but I didn’t really listen to their music until they performed at the Civic Center a few years ago. I’m a huge fan of Dorothy, who was the opening act for the show, and Lita Ford finished out the night full of female empowerment and killer rock music that I’ll still remember for years to come. I became obsessed with their music after that show, and I decided I definitely wanted to see them whenever they came to Fargo next. Before they performed at Bluestem with Joan Jett in August, I got to interview Arejay Hale, the drummer and brother of lead singer Lzzy Hale. He was so friendly, humble and positive, and his passion for music and the band made me love them even more than I already did. They’re known as a live band because their performances are so electric and unparalleled, and this show was definitely no exception.

Nathaniel Rateliff

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

I’ve been a huge NRATNS fan since their first album came out a few years ago. Anyone who knows me knows how obsessed I am with “I Need Never Get Old” and “S.O.B.” (the later of which played during my wedding reception a few weeks ago). I was lucky enough to be part of the pre-sale for tickets, which was super exciting. I got to interview keyboardist Mark Shusterman before their show, and he was so gracious, friendly and just excited about playing music with his friends. Through some problem with my initial ticket order and the kindness of someone sitting near us at the show, my husband and I sat (well, stood and danced) in the second row. Finally seeing them perform live was basically my dream come true, and I’d highly recommend seeing them live, whether you have before or not.

There are many ways to tell a story, but clothing can often speak a world of stories and experiences without uttering a word. A ring can capture the memory of a loved one, a torn pair of jeans can memorialize a thrilling misadventure or a t-shirt can make a fun-filled vacation. We entered the closets of some of Fargo’s most stylish and let them give their clothes a platform to share their own unique stories.

It’s football season, Bison Nation. 2018 will see the North Dakota State Bison go for their seventh FCS National Championship in eight years. While past teams have had plenty of attention and expectations attached to them, this year seems different. This year’s team is shaping up to be one of the most dominant in the program’s history. Is the hype surrounding this team for real? Is it warranted? It’s safe to say you should believe the hype because this Bison team is ready to dominate the standard.

Emily Freeman | Sales Assistant

Emily Freeman

I grew up in Bismarck – The lonely, uneventful two and a half hour drive away. However, my 20 some years there weren’t as uneventful.

I surrounded myself with friends and family, and within that bubble, found myself growing and evolving as each year passed. This led me to leaving Bismarck State College my first year, and finishing out my last three at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Being a double major in English and Mass Communications, I found taking the leap and moving made me read more when I didn’t have that “Bismarck” circle to rely on (English side of things) but also involving myself in the community and forming a new one (Communications side of things).

Other than that, I’m a devoted cat mom, stellar Scrabble player and even sing/play guitar in my free time.

What drew you to Spotlight Media?
Being in the major I was, I already knew about the company and a few articles they had written prior to me even beginning my job hunt. As cheesy as it sounds, I found myself reading these articles, magazine in hand, thinking about how cool it would be to see my name in there one day.

The culture, the drive and the joy to live in the city I moved to and embrace it sparked my interest early on and held it throughout my graduation. Then, luckily for me, landed the job.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
Mentioned earlier, I am a mother of two furry friends – My ragdoll cats, Louis and Finnegan. They have brought out my “crazy cat lady” side, although I’m in love with any breed of animal. Considering this, I would love to grow my little family by adding more to the mix; whether that’s a dog, bunny or pig. Call me crazy, but Brandon, if you’re reading this – Take your pick.

What’s your favorite book and/or movie?
I feel like the answer to this changes after every Netflix binge or stack of books within a 5-hour plane ride, but my solid answer that will never change this point forward is the book I received from my mom for my college graduation.

Although quite simple, I’d Know You Anywhere, My Love by Nancy Tillman is one that will always pull at my heartstrings – It’s something that made me cry in my twenties and will continue to do so in every other decade.

Share something about yourself that would surprise us.
My love for music led me to auditioning for American Idol this past year. After singing two songs for the judge, my fate was chosen and it was not my time to receive a golden ticket. However, the opportunity is one I will never forget, and knowing I had the strength to follow through the nerves was rewarding for me.

It would have been nice to meet Ryan Seacrest, though.

What’s the most useless talent you have?
Useless, impressive or straight disgusting, I can pick up anything with my toes.

Just drop a pen on the floor the next time you’re with me… I’ll show you.
